2023 events: looking ahead to another busy year

January 26th Space-Tech meets Agri-Tech, free, 2-5pm, Easton College, Norwich

A series of short talks will look at opportunities created at the intersection between agri-tech and space-tech and the new Space Cluster for Norfolk and Suffolk, including use of an AgriLiving Lab to trial new space-tech, as well as investment options into space-related tech for agriculture. The event is organised in partnership with New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) which has led the development of the Space Sector Plan for Norfolk and Suffolk. February 21st-22nd Small Satellites & Services International Forum, Spain

Among the sponsors for this event are our members Airbus, GMV, Telespazio and Open Cosmos. It is aimed at designers, technicians, developers and launchers of satellites. Ticket prices for professionals start at 350 euros plus VAT. More details on the event website.

February 23rd ‘How to conduct rapid eligibility assessments for forest carbon projects using geospatial data’, webinar, 4pm

Earth Blox invite S4C members to join their upcoming webinar in which net-zero scientist Dr Genevieve Patenaude, and Earth Observation professor, Iain H Woodhouse, will demonstrate how key questions in the project suitability assessment stage can be answered in minutes using geospatial data on Earth Blox.

Learn how to:

  • Identify areas of forest for potential investment
  • Assess land-use history and current situation of the project area
  • Estimate aboveground forest biomass for an area of interest
  • Conduct risk assessments for drought, fire and flood
  • Produce content for reports to evidence your analysis.

February 28th Energy-smart places: delivering net zero, Manchester, 9am-5pm

Hosted by Innovate UK and EPSRC, this event aims to bring people together from across the energy landscape, to look at how the potential of local smart energy systems can be realised on the journey to net zero. With limited in-person capacity, you can pre-register to attend in person, and the hosts will advise you in January whether you have been allocated a place. The main stage presentations will be streamed and there will also be online exhibition and networking zones. Register here for an in-person or online place.

March 4th-5th National Student Space Conference, University of Manchester

The UKSEDS National Student Space Conference, now in its 35th year, is the premier event for students interested in space, uniting them with academics and professionals from across the country to network, share knowledge, and discuss the challenges facing the sector. It is open to all space enthusiasts and everyone who wants to learn more about the sector, with talks by leading industry figures, a careers fair, and opportunities to take part in discussions and networking events. Students at a UK university or who have been in the past three years, can apply for UKSEDS membership which is free. Non-UKSEDS members tickets are available to employed graduates, and other non-students. Register here.

March 7th Ignite Space, Aerospace Bristol

Organised by UK Space Agency’s Local Growth team this information and networking event is open to all working in the UK space sector. SMEs in the space sector and businesses from sectors with space applicable technologies are especially encouraged to attend. The free event will be hosted by broadcaster Dallas Campbell and will feature AstroAgency’s SpaceBar live. Tickets are due to be available mid-January, in the meantime you can read more in a UK Space Agency blog.

March 7th-9th Futurebuild, ExCeL, London

An event for the built environment sector, promoting sustainability and innovation. Find out more.

March 10th-19th British Science Week 

A STEM public engagement opportunity with activities around schools, community groups, libraries, museums, galleries, businesses and institutions. The aim is to inspire audiences that might not typically get involved with science. Find out more on the website. March 22nd North East Space Conference, Durham, 8.30am-4pm

Dr Barbara Ghinelli, Director, Innovation Clusters and Harwell Campus, UKRI-STFC, and Rebecca Evernden, Director for Space at BEIS, are among the speakers at this Westminster Business Forum’s webinar. May 17th-18th GEO Business, ExCeL, London

The theme is ‘Geospatial technology: Shaping the future’.   Submit an application to speak by February 23rd through the event website.

May 23rd -25th GLOC 2023 – the Global Conference on Climate Change – Oslo

Registration is now open for this new conference being organised by the International Astronautical Federation (IAF), see details and prices here. The theme is ‘Fire and Ice – planetary extremes in a changing climate’. It will be hosted in Oslo by Norsk Romsenter, the Norwegian Space Agency (NOSA). GLOC 2023 will focus on the theme “Fire and Ice – Space for Climate Action” particularly:

  • Climate change impacts on the environment
  • Applications and services driven by climate change
  • Impacts of a changing climate on policy and law
  • Commercial opportunities created by a changing climate
  • Present and future international collaboration on space missions related to climate change
  • Social, communications, economic and cultural dimensions of environmental change

June 7th-8th Space-Comm Expo 2023, Farnborough International  Exhibition & Conference Centre

June 19th-21st European Climate Change Adaptation (ECCA) Conference, Dublin Castle, Ireland

The influential European Climate Change Adaptation (ECCA) Conference returns in person (and online) in 2023, bringing climate science, policy and practice together to under the sub-title Actionable knowledge for a climate resilient Europe’. ECCA2023 is being organised by a European-wide Advisory Committee led by JPI Climate and climate project, MAGICA, supported by the European Commission. It will be held in Ireland for the first time, showcasing real-world examples of adaptation measures around state-of-the-art science and research for a climate resilient Europe. June 24th-July 2nd  London Climate Action Week

London Climate Action Week is hosted by climate change think tank E3G (Third Generation Environmentalism Limited).

Running for the second year as part of London Climate Action Week, this sustainability and Net Zero event is aimed at businesses, investors and innovators. Find out more

June 28th Climate Innovation Forum, London

This is the flagship event of London Climate Action Week, for policy-makers, investors, climate tech solution providers, business leaders and innovators. It is organised by Climate Action. Tickets prices and registration details are here.

September 7th-10th British Science Festival 2023, Exeter

The University of Exeter will be the main host this year with free events across the city and its campus. Find out more.

September 11th-15th EUMETSAT Meteorological Satellite Conference 2023, Malmö

The theme this year is ‘The Evolutionary challenge for EO satellites from technology to exploitation’. Sessions topics include ‘Assessing climate variability and change using satellite observations’ and ‘New methods to exploit and visualize EO data’. Details, including fees, are available on the website.

ESA Fringe Conference, University of Leeds, September 11th-15th

Fringe 2023 is a free workshop on ‘Advances in the Science and Applications of SAR Interferometry and Sentinel-1 InSAR’ open to scientists, students, as well as representatives from national, European and international space agencies and value adding industries. There are opportunities to have a presence as well as to take part, more details here. Calls for submissions are open now. Registration will open in May.

October 2nd -6th  IAC 2023

This year’s International Astronautical Conference will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan.

October 2nd-6th Adaptation Futures 2023, Montreal

The biennial conference provides a unique chance to share expertise, skills and backgrounds and exchange experiences with an active adaptation network. The call for session proposals, abstracts and posters is open until January 23rd. Find out more here.

October 23rd-27th World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) Open Science Conference, Rwanda

Held every decade this event brings together communities from around the world to showcase recent and significant advances in climate science, identify gaps and opportunities, and to jointly develop future plans. Application for abstracts is open until February 28th. Visit the website.

November 6th-10th GEO Week & Ministerial, Cape Town

The dates for the 2023 GEO (Group on Earth Observations) Week have been amended to November 6th -10th with the Cape Town Ministerial Summit booked for the 10th. There are few details available but keep an eye on the GEO website for further updates.

November 21st-23rd UK Space Conference, Belfast
