2022 events for the Earth Observation community

The Earth Observation calendar for 2022 is already filling up, continuing the momentum generated by hosting COP26 in Glasgow last November.

Space4Climate has compiled its first draft calendar of key events relevant to our members from across the UK Earth Observation community, including government departments, businesses and industries, academia and research.

January:

Orbit South Coast, South Coast Centre for Excellence in Satellite Applications

The Technopole, Portsmouth | 09 January

An in-person networking event to connect key players in the UK space industry locally and nationally, including sector news and funding opportunities. Speakers include Jason Hopkins, Senior Innovation & Research Scientist at Ordnance Survey, Gail Eastaugh, Programme Director at AeroSpace Cornwall and Richard Wylde, Managing Director at TK Instruments. Transforming our understanding of global forests, the sixth annual BIFOR community meeting, hybrid event

Birmingham | 25–27 January

Organised by the Birmingham Institute of Forest Research this event will focus on why the challenges of monitoring forest ecosystems across different biomes mean we currently lack a clear picture of how global forests are changing. The 3-day programme will address current capacity to observe, and protect the future of, the world’s forests, and give perspectives on how we can leverage, bring together and expand efforts to transform our understanding of those forests, including emerging satellite technology. Space2Connect, hybrid event

Queen Elizabeth II Centre, London | 01 February, 09.30am to 20.30pm

Check the UK Space Agency’s Twitter feed and LinkedIn page for availability for this annual space applications networking event. Sessions will include autonomous and low emission aircraft, vessels and vehicles, and multispectral imagery.

Middle East and North Africa Climate Week

Online | 28 February–03 March

The first Middle East and North Africa Climate Week (MENACW) will be hosted by the Government of the United Arab Emirates in Dubai and online. It will bring together key stakeholders to take the pulse of climate action in the region, explore climate challenges and opportunities and showcase ambitious solutions, launching the 2022 series of Regional Climate Weeks. Building on the momentum of COP26, MENACW  aims to be a platform for governments, cities, private sector leaders, financial institutions and civil society to explore resilience against climate risks, the transition to a low-emission economy and collaboration to solve pressing challenges. Futurebuild, in-person

ExCeL, London | 01–03 March

Focused on sustainability for the built environment sector, Futurebuild showcases manufacturers and suppliers of the most innovative technology, products and services. Stands and programme events are designed for cross sector collaboration to inspire the transformational change needed by the construction industry to achieve net-zero. UKSEDS National Student Space Conference

Hybrid event, London | 05–06 March

The UKSEDS National Student Space Conference is a valuable opportunity for employers and academics to meet talented and committed students who are interested in space. Many of you will have met members of UKSEDS (the UK’s national student space society) through our Space4Climate Champions programme. The in-person event is hosted by KCL Space at King’s College London and Space4Climate has been invited to take part. More details and a link to register.

Satellite Applications Catapult and the Manufacturing Technology Centre, Coventry | 30–31 March

An in-person conference examining the opportunities and possibilities for manufacturing within the global space sector. It will focus on key emerging technologies and their alignment to the Government’s National Space Strategy including supply chain, in-space remote operations, components and materials, and wider ‘art-of the-possible’ technology development. April:

European Geosciences Union (EGU) 2022

Vienna | 03–08 April

Being organised as a hybrid event, the EGU General Assembly 2022 will bring together geoscientists from all over the world for one meeting covering all disciplines of the Earth, planetary, and space sciences. The EGU aims to provide a forum where scientists, especially early career scientists, can present their work and discuss their ideas with experts in all fields of geoscience. GEO Business

Excel, London | 18–19 May

This event is aimed at all involved in gathering, storing, processing and delivering geospatial information. Registration is free and open now, more details are available.

ESA Living Planet Symposium

Bonn | 23–27 May

Titled ‘Taking the pulse of our planet from space’ the Living Planet Symposium 2022 will not only see scientists present their latest findings on Earth’s environment and climate derived from satellite data but will also focus on Earth observation’s role in building a sustainable future and a resilient society. Participants will also be able to explore how emerging technologies are revolutionising the use of Earth observation and how business and the economy can benefit.
