Applications
There is a wealth of untapped climate information that could be used to inform risk and impact assessment and adaptation actions in many sectors. However it is spread across a variety of different platforms and locations, and with user uptake sub-optimal. To address this challenge, the Climate Data Store (CDS) has been developed, providing a single European point of access, through a distributed system, to climate data and indicators via a web and API interface.
The CDS is designed to meet the needs of different users, including developers, expert users and a wide range of other users, who can interact with the CDS at different levels.
UK expertise
The CDS has been developed as part of the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), which is operated by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weathers Forecasts (ECMWF). Telespazio VEGA UK is leading the delivery and development of the CDS, under contract to ECMWF, to provide a robust and reliable infrastructure that allows thousands of users to access a unique catalogue of datasets and tools.
Climate Earth Observation datasets incorporated into the catalogue will include a selection of Essential Climate Variable datasets. These include sea ice concentration 1978 – present (global, northern and southern hemispheres), sea surface temperature 1991-2012, ozone, aerosol, CO2, soil moisture, glacier distribution & elevation changes, albedo and leaf area index 1999-present.
