The world’s most influential climate conference is hosted this year by the United Arab Emirates in Expo City, Dubai.
COP stands for Conference of the Parties and it is convened by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) bringing world leaders together to review progress that UN member countries have made to limit climate change and to negotiate new actions and targets in response to the latest scientific evidence. It also attracts the leading climate scientists to present their cutting-edge research, climate projections and showcases the latest climate technology and products. This brings a wide audience of private and public sector as well as media.
This year will feature the first Global Stocktake (GST) – a data-based inventory of how the planet is progressing in the context of climate change.
Attending COP28 – unless you are invited as a speaker, a member of an accredited observer organisation (applications close more than a year in advance) or official national delegation, it is very difficult to gain access to the COP Blue Zone, which is controlled by the UNFCCC and is where the official negotiations and speeches take place. The Green Zone is open to the public – find out more in our article on COP28.
