Welcome to Space4Climate’s resources page to help new and existing satellite data users gain access to market intelligence on the adoption of climate information from space.
Despite the increasing availability and reduced cost of commercial space-enabled climate services, in some sectors uptake has been relatively slow. To address this Space4Climate funded three groups of experts to produce navigation aids.
We put them to work in three sectors: Agriculture, GHG Emissions, and Sustainable Finance
The aim of each group was to breakdown some of the most common barriers to using information from space about climate change and its impacts – Earth Observation – and provide sets of open access resources for the benefit of all.
Each group has collated its important findings into insight reports containing actionable information of use to those identifying actions needed to increase the adoption of Earth Observation. These resources are valuable to the satellite Earth Observation supply side and policy stakeholders to improve the understanding of end user pain points and requirements.

Agriculture
Sowing Satellite Solutions: Reducing GHG emissions from agriculture using space technology
Lead: Environment Systems Ltd
Consortium: Ian Encke Consulting, Authors Café, James Cutler, Remote Sensing Applications Consultants Ltd, Pixalytics, Smart Trade Africa Ltd, Agcurate, Dhatri.io, FNK Designs.
Stakeholders: The Compleat Food Group, Foodsteps, M&S Food, PepsiCo Agricultural Science, Simpsons Malt, Sustained Impact, Agrasta, AHDB, CLA, Geospatial Commission, NFU, UKRI Business Connect, Defra.
Project objective: Unlocking uptake of technology as a transformative enabler for net zero delivery, identifying solutions to barriers and creating roadmap actions to deliver these with a focus on UK agriculture.

Report outcomes: The result is a roadmap for proposed solutions and actions. Through a series of roundtable discussion and 1:1s with the farming sector, the report identifies 150 key findings describing the nature of the problems and proposed roadmap activities (e.g. technical, operational etc). The report articulates the journey and sets out a roadmap for desirable solutions and respective actions the EO community needs to undertake to support Net Zero farming.
GHG Emissions
Opportunities for Earth Observation technology to assist the regulatory framework in UK industrial methane gas monitoring
Lead: Retina Space
Sector Leads: Dhatri.io, Agtelligence, HR Wallingford, Sparkgeo.
Expert Group: Satellite Applications Catapult, University of Leicester, University of Reading, National Physical Laboratory (NPL), National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO), CGG (Viridien).
Project objective: Addressing how to use Earth Observation (EO) technology effectively, reliably and operationally, to support the regulatory framework in the UK for monitoring methane gas emissions across key industrial sectors.

Report outcomes: The report summarises the UK regulatory landscape for the monitoring of GHG emissions across Oil & Gas, Landfills, Waste Water and Coal and presents key findings of how Satellite EO must improve to better support policy, user operations and the wider regulatory framework. Finally, the study made a breakthrough in the landfill sector and provides a promising outlook on how the community can support landfill operators in the UK.
Sustainable Finance
Space-Based Innovation for IFRS S2 Climate-Related Disclosures (formerly TCFD, Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures) Compliance
Consortium: Control Risks, GMV, Open Cosmos, Satellite Applications Catapult, Riskaware.
Project objective: Bridging the gap between satellite technology and financial reporting to encourage improved reporting practises in line with existing and emerging standards, in particular the four core elements of IFRS S2 Climate-related Disclosures. For more details on the theme click here.

Report outcomes: A combined analysis of satellite technology solutions tailored to meet the reporting requirements through to practical examples and guidance. The report provides valuable evidence on how EO can effectively contribute to risk management and adaptation strategies. It also demystifies the integration of EO technology into financial reporting practices while also examining its promising future prospects for risk management and financial reporting. It outlines strategic recommendations and subsequent steps to guide financial institutions in enhancing their climate risk reporting practices through the effective use of EO data.
