New Report: Agriculture – Furthering market understanding of climate services

Read the Space4Climate Market Breakthrough Funding #2 report – key recommendations & insights for accelerating take-up of EO data by the agriculture community

High priority actions have been identified to help the agriculture community clear the hurdles that stand between them and the many improvements that satellite data can offer their bottom line.

Investigations by a consortium funded by Space4Climate previously found that ‘significant barriers’ to the adoption of satellite-derived services are currently limiting demand and uptake, preventing the sector from exploiting the opportunities and benefits. A second round of funding has now produced 14 key recommendations that the report says have ‘the potential to offer relatively low-cost quick wins to enhance the uptake and usage of satellite-derived data and information services’ by identifying suitable end users in agriculture.

Focus on ‘last mile’

The six-month Space4Climate-funded project ‘Furthering market understanding through engaging with farm advisors to support climate services’, focused on understanding the use of satellite services within the ‘last mile’ of the agricultural supply chain – those advisors and suppliers who supply and interpret data or provide advice and/or services directly to farmers, alongside the farmers themselves.

Activities included webinars, attendance at agricultural shows and conferences, a survey, 1-to-1 interviews and webinars with the support of the leading agri innovation group, Agri-TechE. The discussions yielded more than 300 findings, which have been curated and are reflected in the report.

Aim of Market Breakthrough projects

It was in June 2025 that Space4Climate announced the two successful consortia in our Phase 2 Market Breakthrough Funding (MBF) round. They were tasked with building on insights from our first MBF, that resulted in three reports on barriers blocking take-up of EO data by end users. Their aim was to develop practical roadmaps to put many of those recommendations into action.

Space4Climate members Pixalytics led the MBF Phase 2 consortium focusing on farm advisors. The other consortium members were:  Environment Systems, Ian Encke Consulting, and Remote Sensing Applications Consultants Ltd. Stakeholders consulted during the project included farmers, smallholders, growers, machinery providers, agronomists, farm advisors, agricultural and sustainability networks, certification providers, technology providers, Government bodies focused on research and innovation and Non-Governmental Organisations.

Agriculture MBF Project Showcase

In January 2026 the project partners hosted the  Space4Climate Agriculture Market Breakthrough Project Showcase, at Geovation in London. It was the culmination of a year of stakeholder engagement processes and demonstrated the power of invested actors coming together and working collaboratively for a common good. The wide range of attendees, from farmers to agri consultants and specialists, to sector-wide representatives, including organic certification organisation the Soil Association and the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), was a reflection of the high level of stakeholder engagement and interest in the benefits of space-based data, platforms and products.
