News  |  19 June, 2024

Have you seen the two new UK projects on the Space Climate Observatory (SCO)? Space4Nature & Strata – two Earth Observation applications developed my S4C members, go live

Space4Nature and Strata are now live on the interactive online guide to leading world climate services.

You can explore them both, and 15 other newly featured international climate data applications, here: https://www.spaceclimateobservatory.org/projects

Space4Nature

Zoom in on the UK to find Space4Nature – used to reverse fragmentation of natural habitats by identifying potential corridors of land that can be restored and / or managed for nature. A collaboration of Surrey University, Surrey Wildlife Trust, Buglife and Painshill Park is developing  the application. They are using past and current very high resolution satellite imagery of sites in Surrey with citizen-sourced observations, AI and ML to pinpoint which areas of land could be joined up with similar habitats. The sites include Painshill Park, Quarry Hangers, Chobham Common and Puttenham Common.

Strata

Zoom in on Somalia to find Strata – a mapping platform created by a collaboration between United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) under the EU-UNEP Climate Change, Environment, and Security Partnership. The methodology and prototype of the tool were developed in collaboration with Scotland-based Earth Blox and the University of Edinburgh, both members of Space4Climate. The platform is powered by the user-friendly tool Earth Map, based on Google Earth Engine.

Strata can be used to identify hotspots of the greatest stresses caused by the combined impacts of climate change and other factors, such as conflict and fragile economies on the livelihoods of vulnerable communities. The data visualisation platform enables early warning and gives 130+ UN country teams the ability to carry out multi-hazard risk assessments.
