Meet our new members who are expanding climate innovation using space-based data and technologies

Three innovative UK businesses join space climate community

The Space4Climate Board has confirmed three new member organisations that represent the UK’s expertise and diverse services in the thriving space-based climate sector.

We are delighted to welcome:

Bright Ascension www.brightascension.com – a space software provider, working with our members RAL Space and Open Cosmos on the UK Space Agency-funded project SOLSTICE: Solar Occultation Limb Sounding Transformative Instruments for Climate Exploration. Bright Ascension offers end-to-end space software products, including innovative solutions, designed to re-shape the delivery of space-based insights and analytics within the Earth Observation sector and make it significantly faster, simpler and cheaper. It has offices in Edinburgh and Dundee.

Capterio www.capterio.com  – uses satellite data to track gas and oil field flares and offers a capturing and decarbonising support service. Capterio works with companies and governments to quantify and reduce emissions by helping them to improve visibility of flaring, improve operational effectiveness and making investments that reduce flaring. Its near real-time gas flaring tracking platform FlareIntel Pro received funding from the UK Space Agency.  Capterio is based in London and CEO Mark Davis presented at this year’s Space4Climate members’ conference, you can read his blog about it here.

Frost & Sullivan www.frost.com –  a transformational growth consultancy with clients in the satellite community and offices around the world, including Oxford and London.

Space4Climate is chaired by the UK Space Agency as a non-commercial organisation to support and promote climate data from space and its innovation for services and products for climate decisions and climate action.

Promoting the role of space in climate decisions

The community works together to promote the role of space in underpinning climate policy, action and services, enabling and encouraging the use of trusted climate data and the development and take-up of climate services and products. Members range from start-ups and entrepreneurs to multi-national corporations, world-leading research organisations and government departments, covering the entire supply chain of Earth Observation data for climate.

Space4Climate also represents the community and UK expertise on the national and international climate stage where members can join our panel events and stands.

Through Space4Climate’s meetings and events, members have direct access to cutting-edge climate science and data, new climate satellite missions and discussions about decisions on climate policy and funding initiatives. The group provides an active forum for collaborations, knowledge exchange and funding initiatives, responding quickly to emerging climate topics that can be informed and addressed using climate data from space.

Emissions, transformations and space-based solutions

Mark Davis, CEO of Capterio said: “We have been supported by Space4Climate to develop an innovative algorithm and platform – called FlareIntel – which identifies and tracks gas flares from space.  Gas flaring (the burning of gas at oil and gas facilities) is a major source of waste (up to 4% of all produced gas) and generates up to 1 billion CO2-equivalent tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. As a member we are looking forward to learning about what other members are doing, getting super inspired. We hope to identify synergies with other groups – and help to drive down emissions too.”

Arjun Sreekumar, Consulting Director, Middle East & Europe at Frost & Sullivan said: “Frost & Sullivan has been actively advising a wide range of organisations within the space sector, from innovative start-ups developing cutting-edge technologies to strategic investment funds focused on breakthrough space companies. We’ve been at the forefront of uncovering new market opportunities and crafting innovative strategies to ensure a resilient and sustainable space supply chain. As a member of the Space4Climate community, we are particularly focused on understanding new technologies that drive sustainability in space, identifying the key players leading this charge, and facilitating their connections with governments that can leverage these innovations.”

“We are honoured to become a part of Space4Climate and collaborate with leading UK space organisations to help advance climate science, monitoring and research,” said Richard Adams, Sales Director at Bright Ascension. “Joining the network underscores our commitment to connecting the dots between upstream satellite development and downstream space-based solutions on the ground.”

Members’ first opportunity to get to know the new organisations will be the online Group Meeting on October 9th.
