Delivering Climate Adaptation and Resilience: The Role of Measurement – an NPL webinar with Space4Climate

Space4Climate is partnering with the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) for the second day of this two-day webinar workshop. Join us to discover how metrology, the science of measurement, supports climate action and to help identify and prioritise measurement needs and challenges for climate adaptation and resilience in the UK.

Adapting to a changing climate requires coordinated action and confidence in the data underpinning the decision-making process. Metrology (the science of measurement) is essential to providing this confidence and NPL, as the UK’s National Metrology Institute, has a responsibility to tackle priority measurement needs in support of this national challenge.

Recognising this urgent need, NPL is hosting this two-day workshop, partnering with Space4Climate on Day 2. It will bring together policy-makers and the wider climate science community, with sectoral stakeholders, to identify and prioritise measurement needs and challenges for climate adaptation and resilience in the UK.

Day 1: Wednesday 23 February

Presented by NPL

This session will have a policy focus, discussing:

  • Adaptation and resilience needs, and climate risks, facing the UK,
  • The role of measurement in supporting adaptation policy,
  • Identification of measurement challenges that need addressing.

Day 2: Thursday 24 February

Presented by NPL & Space4Climate

This session will have a solution focus, with consideration for the role of geospatial and space-based solutions discussing:

  • The role of remote sensing and space-based solutions, and how these can support adaptation and resilience action,
  • Prioritisation of the measurement needs that will underpin evidence-based decision making,
  • Recognition of knowledge gaps and how measurement can help to address them.

Keynote speakers will include representatives from the Climate Change Committee (CCC), the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), the Ordnance Survey (OS) and the National Physical Laboratory (NPL).

Free post-workshop report

The content and discussions from this workshop will be published as a free report by NPL in Spring 2022, highlighting urgent measurement needs and challenges for climate adaptation and resilience. All those signed up for the workshop will automatically be emailed a copy of the report.
